Hiking in South Tyrol from the Apartment Door
One of the things guests mention most often in their reviews is how immediately the hiking starts. There is no drive to a trailhead, no car park to navigate. The marked paths begin a few minutes' walk from the apartment, climbing into the meadows and forests of the Tschögglberg plateau from the moment you leave the front door.
The Tschögglberg
Verano sits at about 1,200 metres on the Tschögglberg, the high plateau between Merano and Bolzano. It is a landscape of larch meadows, farms and mountain pastures, with Haflinger horses grazing and wide views over the Adige valley. It is much quieter than the better-known hiking areas nearby.
Marked trails start in the village, so most walks begin at the apartment door. Trail maps are available from the tourist office in Verano. For higher mountains, the Merano 2000 area and Texel Nature Park are an easy drive away.
Walks to try
Tschögglberg plateau walk (easy, 2 to 3 hours)
A circular route across the plateau above Verano, passing through flower meadows with continuous views south across the Adige valley and towards the Dolomites. Suitable for families with children.
Knottnkino (moderate, half day)
A walk to the Rotsteinkogel, where a row of chairs faces the Adige valley and the mountains beyond like a cinema screen. One of the best-known viewpoints on the Tschögglberg.
Mountain huts above the village (moderate, half day)
Walk up through the larch woods to the Vöraner Alm and Leadner Alm, open in summer for lunch and a rest before the walk back down.
Ifinger peak (3 hours from the upper cable car, challenging)
The highest point above the Merano 2000 ski area, at 2,581 metres. The ascent takes around three hours on marked trails with some steep sections. The summit view, from the Ötztal Alps in the north to the Dolomites in the south, is exceptional.
Meraner Höhenweg in Texel Nature Park (day trip by car)
The classic long-distance trail around the Texel group, South Tyrol's largest nature park. Drive to one of the lifts above Merano and walk a section with views over the Adige valley.
When to visit
The main hiking season runs from late May to mid-October. June and September tend to offer the best conditions: the meadows are in flower in June, and September brings clear skies, cooler temperatures and far fewer visitors than July and August.
At about 1,200 metres, Verano is noticeably cooler than Merano in the valley, comfortable even on the hottest summer days. You will want a layer in the evenings regardless of the month.
After the walk
The apartment has a well-equipped kitchen if you want to cook, or the restaurants in Verano are a short walk away. Merano's thermal baths at Terme Merano are about 20 minutes by car, a good option for sore legs after a long day on the mountain.
